Metallized CPP Film: Material Science & Barrier Physics

Understanding the engineering mechanics behind Cast Polypropylene metallization and why it is replacing traditional aluminum foils.

Metallized Cast Polypropylene (MCPP) is an advanced barrier material created by depositing a microscopically thin layer of vaporized high-purity aluminum (99.99%) onto a pre-treated cast polypropylene film substrate. Unlike biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), the cast manufacturing process yields a film with superior heat sealability, higher impact strength, and excellent mechanical elongation, making it the perfect interior barrier sealant layer for flexible packaging laminates.

By vaporizing aluminum under a vacuum chamber at pressures below 10-4 mbar, the metal particles form a uniform crystalline structure over the polymer surface. This structure dramatically restricts the path of volatile gas molecules, providing outstanding barriers against moisture, oxygen, light, and aroma transmission.

Critical Structural Parameters

  • Optical Density (OD): Standard ranges from 1.8 to 2.8. A higher optical density indicates a thicker metallic layer, which exponentially improves the moisture and UV barrier performance.
  • Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR): Engineered to achieve ratings below 0.5 g/(m²·24h) under standard tropical testing environments (38°C, 90% RH).

Mono-Material Polyolefin Laminates (Recyclability)

Historically, high-barrier pouch constructions required laminating PET or OPA films to a CPP sealant layer. While effective, this multi-polymer blend is virtually impossible to recycle in standard industrial loops. The industry is actively shifting toward Mono-Material PP structures (BOPP + MCPP). By using the same polyolefin family for both the outer printing face and the metallized barrier sealant layer, the final waste package can be collected, regranulated, and fed back into industrial manufacturing loops.

Advanced Chemical Coatings & Primers

To improve bond strength and eliminate delamination, our next-generation MCPP films feature chemical priming prior to vacuum aluminum deposition. Applying a water-based primer layer modifications at the molecular scale, creating a stronger bond between the aluminum molecules and the polypropylene substrate. This helps maintain high barrier properties even in humid or oily conditions.

The Transition from Foil to Metallized CPP

Standard aluminum foil (AL) offers exceptional barrier properties, but suffers from cracking and is susceptible to pinholes during transport. MCPP solves these issues by combining the flexibility of polymer films with the barrier performance of metal. What is the typical thickness range of your Metallized CPP (MCPP) film?
Our standard thickness range is from 15 to 40 microns (60 to 160 gauge). Custom formulations can be extruded down to 12 microns or up to 50 microns for heavy-duty industrial laminates.
How does MCPP compare to BOPET or BOPP in terms of barrier properties?
MCPP provides better heat sealability and puncture resistance compared to BOPET and BOPP. It serves as a sealable barrier layer, whereas BOPET and BOPP typically require an additional sealant layer (like LDPE or CPP) to make a pouch.
What surface treatments do you apply to secure lamination and metal adhesion?
We use high-power inline corona treatment on the non-metallized sealant side (typically 38-40 mN/m) and specialized vacuum chamber plasma treatment prior to aluminum deposition on the metallized side. This process ensures high bond strength during lamination.
What is the standard shelf life of the dyne level on Metallized CPP Film?
Normally, dyne decay occurs over time. We recommend laminating or printing within 3 months of delivery. Proper storage in temperature-controlled, dry environments (below 30°C and 60% RH) will help maintain surface tension.
Can Metallized CPP films be used for retort sterilization packaging?
Standard MCPP films are not suitable for retort processing because the steam heat can degrade the polymer structure. However, we manufacture a specialized High-Retort grade of CPP using random block copolymers that can withstand sterilization up to 121°C. Please specify this requirement when ordering.
